About Mia Ferreira

Mia Ferreira - certified Iyengar yoga teacher

Hi I’m Mia!

I’m not particularly active or sporty, nor was I ever a naturally flexible person. In fact my eye-hand coordination is terrible, and I couldn’t touch my toes when I started practising yoga!

I was born on the island of Madeira (look it up!) and came to Australia when I was 3 years old. I grew up in south-Sydney before moving to the eastern-suburbs in my 20’s. I moved to Melbourne in 2015 for work a opportunity - and for now, I call it home!

I’ve been practicing Iyengar yoga for 15 years, after coming across a school just a few doors down from my apartment in Potts Point in early 2009. I began teacher training in 2011 primarily to deepen my practice and understanding of Iyengar yoga. After almost 7 intensive years of training, I finally became a Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher in 2019.

I’ve been teaching corporate and group yoga classes around Sydney and Melbourne for more than 10 years now and enjoy seeing the light shining in my students eyes after class.

Why I practice yoga…

Flexibility

I wasn’t blessed with natural flexibility or a graceful dancers physique. But, I’ve always been curious and enjoy learning new things. Over the years I’ve come to realise these qualities are far more important for the practice of yoga than any physical abilities. What you see me demonstrate has taken years of practice and teacher training - and I still have a long way to go…

Self Development

I’ve always been interested in self-development and like many people, I suffer from my bouts of self-doubt. I have beliefs, stories, fears and habits that I’m constantly exploring and looking to improve. Practicing yoga allows me to come face-to-face with these parts of myself and as I work with them on the mat, I have the opportunity to take the lessons off the mat, and into my life.

Anxiety Relief

I first tried yoga to help manage my stress and anxiety. I was working in a demanding PR role at the time, but I think I’ve always experienced anxiety to some degree. At first, the physical practice of yoga just helped me get out of my head. With continued practice, yoga has also helped to soothe my nervous system, calm and focus my mind and find a sense of inner peace.

Work-Life-Balance

While I’m lucky enough to work for myself these days, I also know how hard it is to juggle the demands of full-time work and life. Carving out enough time with friends and family, as well as yourself is essential for a satisfying, balanced and happy life. I’m passionate about helping individuals and organisations find a better balance and help manage stress and anxiety through the regular practice of yoga.
